[3/12/2013] The Silverton Splitfest is coming in hot, and the deadline for lodging registration is this Friday, March 15. If you don’t need accommodations the deadline to register is April 1.
More details from the organizers: The event will be held in the town of Silverton, Colorado. A house in town will host the nightly activities (slide shows, two nights catered dinner, free beer, free demo setups, place to hang out). During the day, people are free to explore the backcountry around Silverton. This is not a guided event although we will have Southwest Adventure Guides helping with a slide show and available for people if they want to hire a guide. We have a raffle with lots of swag donated. We are working out the details of how the raffle will work, but likely the first ticket is free with entry and people can buy additional ones for $10 each. We are going to try to use that to raise money for CAIC. It’s pretty cheap to attend ($70) and if people want three nights lodging included that’s only an extra $100.
On Thursday, before the event is in full … Continued
Knox Frank loved the mountains. His passion, combined with his charismatic wit, was simply contagious. The only thing that made the mountains better for Knox was sharing them with friends, of which he had many.
Knox died in an avalanche while skiing with a group of friends in the spring of 2012. To honor the memory of Knox and share his love for the backcountry experience with others, Crested Butte Mountain Guides is offering the Knox Frank Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honors Knox’s memory as a skier, community member, mentor and friend. It provides an opportunity for a backcountry enthusiast to take an avalanche course in Crested Butte, Colorado. This scholarship is unique in that it offers the chosen participant to walk in Knox’s shoes, in his beloved backcountry community of Crested Butte, where his memory is still strong and alive. This is an incredible opportunity for someone to further his/her backcountry education while experiencing a memorable time in a true ski town community. The chosen winner will receive a FREE avalanche education package in Crested Butte, Colorado which includes:

KETCHUM, ID – MTNAPPROACH is proud to announce their first team of Professional Snowboarders. This group of 11 riders represents the wide diversity of uses that the MTNAPPROACH System is designed for, accessing backcountry jumps, long distance touring, 55-degree couloirs, or just some side country at your local resort. “We’re stoked to have these riders on our team to help us evolve this system into the most useful tool available for backcountry snowboarding.” said Cory Smith, Founder of MTNAPPROACH. Partner and Ops. Director Kaiser said, “It’s rad to put some young guns known for jibbing in the same yurt as an Olympic halfpipe medalist, some staple backcountry shreds, PLUS, some all-time snowboard legends. They are all stoked on the backcountry experience and loving the product.” Brian Iguchi summed it up best, “I’m stoked to go bag some couloirs that I’ve been looking at for years. I wouldn’t take a split up there, but this is perfect, now I can ride ‘em on my snowboard.”

Silverton, CO – February 3, 2012 – As a company on the leading edge of design and innovation in the snowboard industry, it’s no surprise that Venture Snowboards, based out of Silverton, Colo., is once again pushing the envelope. For the winter 11.12 season Venture is launching the Shape Shack – an experimental division of the company charged with dreaming up new and innovative board shapes.
“The idea is to take a bit of a mad scientist kind of approach, experimenting with designs that might normally be considered too wacky, and then testing those concepts by offering small batch releases to the public,” says Klemens Branner, Venture’s founder and design engineer. Branner will be heading up the effort, with creative input from big mountain legend Johan Olofsson and the product testing team at Silverton Mountain.
Shape Shack boards will be produced in small, limited edition runs and made available to the public through the Venture Webstore. According to Branner, this small batch approach will allow the company to do market research, boost customer involvement, and create innovative new designs simultaneously. “On the consumer side of things, it gives our … Continued
